An email marketing and automation specialist. Campaigns, deep automations, segmentation and a CRM that plugs into the rest of your stack.

See ActiveCampaign plans

Kartra vs ActiveCampaign is not really a fight between two email tools. ActiveCampaign is an email and automation specialist that expects you to bring your own website, checkout and course platform. Kartra is an all-in-one platform where email is one part of a system that also sells and delivers your products. This compares them at matching contact numbers, adds up what it costs to rebuild Kartra with ActiveCampaign and a checkout, and says plainly who each one is for.

Short version

  • Choose ActiveCampaign if email and automation are the main job and you already have a website, checkout or store.
  • Choose Kartra if you sell courses, coaching or digital products and want pages, email, checkout and memberships in one account.
  • ActiveCampaign is cheaper for email alone: $15 a month billed annually at 1,000 contacts, against $52 for Kartra Essentials at 500.
  • Once you add a checkout and course hosting to ActiveCampaign, Kartra is usually the cheaper bill.
  • Kartra's Essentials plan charges 5% of sales. Its other plans, and ActiveCampaign, take no cut.

The short answer

If your business already runs on a website, a store or a checkout you like, and what you want is better email marketing, ActiveCampaign is the stronger tool. Its automation builder goes deeper, its segmentation is finer, and it connects to far more of the software you already use.

If you are building a business that sells its own courses, coaching or digital products, and you would rather not glue five tools together, Kartra is the better fit. Its email and automation are less sophisticated, but they reach every other part of the platform, so a purchase can tag a contact, start a sequence and unlock a course without any integration work.

KartraPick Kartra if
  • You sell courses, memberships, coaching or digital products
  • You want checkout, pages and email sharing one contact list
  • You plan to run your own affiliate program
  • You want video hosting and booking calendars included
  • You would rather pay one bill than five
ActiveCampaignPick ActiveCampaign if
  • Email and automation are the main thing you need
  • You already have a website, store or checkout
  • You want advanced segmentation and conditional content
  • You rely on integrations with Shopify, WooCommerce or a CRM
  • You run a service or sales-led business, not a course business

What each platform is built for

ActiveCampaign started as email marketing and grew into marketing automation with a CRM attached. Everything in it points at the same goal: sending the right message to the right contact at the right moment. It has landing pages and forms, but no checkout, no course or membership area, no video hosting and no affiliate manager. It expects those to live in other tools, and it connects to more than a thousand of them.

Kartra was built as a whole business in one login. One account covers landing pages and funnels, email and SMS, checkout and payments, membership sites, video hosting, webinars, calendars, a customer helpdesk and an affiliate program. The individual builders are not the best in their class. The value is that they share one contact record, so every tool can trigger every other tool.

One is the best email engine you can plug in. The other is the whole machine.

That difference decides almost every row below. ActiveCampaign wins wherever depth in email and automation matters. Kartra wins wherever the question is how many tools you need to run the business.

Pricing at matching contact numbers

Both platforms price by contacts, so the only fair comparison is at the same list size. ActiveCampaign's lowest band is 1,000 contacts, so a 500 contact list pays the 1,000 contact price. Kartra jumps from 2,500 to 12,500 contacts, so a 10,000 contact list needs Kartra Growth. Prices are per month, monthly billing first and annual billing second, and AC stands for ActiveCampaign.

Plan500 contacts2,500 contacts10,000 contacts
KartraEssentials, $59 or $52, plus 5% of salesStarter, $119 or $99Growth, $229 or $189
AC Starter$19 or $15$49 or $39$189 or $149
AC Plus$59 or $49$119 or $95$239 or $189
AC Pro$99 or $79$189 or $149$469 or $375
AC Enterprise$179 or $145$319 or $255$739 or $589

On price alone ActiveCampaign wins every column, and Starter looks like a bargain. It is worth reading the plan limits before you take that at face value. Starter allows only 5 actions per automation, has no landing pages, is capped at 25,000 contacts and is email only. Plus is the first plan most businesses can run proper automations on, and at 2,500 contacts it costs exactly what Kartra Starter costs on monthly billing.

ActiveCampaign's pricing page leads with annual prices, and paying yearly saves roughly 17% to 21% at the tiers above. Kartra quotes savings of up to 22% for annual billing. Kartra also has a Professional plan at $549 a month, or $429 billed annually, for 25,000 contacts, plus custom Enterprise pricing.

Kartra figures come from Kartra's plans and pricing page. ActiveCampaign figures come from its pricing page and calculator in US dollars. ActiveCampaign shows annual prices by default, so confirm the monthly price at checkout. Both companies change their plans from time to time.

The 5% Kartra Essentials fee

The one cost that changes this comparison after you sign up is Kartra's transaction fee. On Essentials, Kartra charges 5% of every sale and subscription rebill through your Kartra checkouts, invoiced monthly, even if you pay for the plan annually. Starter and above charge no fee. ActiveCampaign has no checkout, so it charges nothing on sales, but the checkout tool you pair it with will have its own terms.

Monthly sales through Kartra5% feeEssentials totalStarter total
$500$25$84$119
$1,200$60$119$119
$3,000$150$209$119

On monthly billing the break even is $1,200 a month in sales. Above that, Kartra Starter is cheaper than Essentials and the gap grows quickly. If you compare ActiveCampaign with Kartra Essentials, remember that the Kartra figure rises with your revenue. Our Kartra review covers the fee rules in full, including how refunds are credited.

The total-stack cost

The pricing table compares an email tool with a whole platform, so it flatters ActiveCampaign. To do what Kartra does, ActiveCampaign needs at least a checkout and somewhere to host courses. As a worked example, we pair it with SamCart, a checkout platform that includes sales pages and a course app on every plan. SamCart Core is $79 a month or $710 a year. Order bumps, upsells and an affiliate program need SamCart Pro at $199 a month or $1,790 a year.

Your setupKartraActiveCampaign + SamCart
2,500 contacts, a course and a simple checkoutStarter, $119 or $99Plus + Core, $198 or about $154
2,500 contacts, with order bumps and upsellsStarter, $119 or $99Plus + Pro, $318 or about $244
10,000 contacts, with your own affiliate programGrowth, $229 or $189Plus + Pro, $438 or about $338
2,500 contacts, email only, checkout already in placeStarter, $119 or $99Plus alone, $119 or $95

Even these figures understate the gap. Kartra's price also covers video hosting, webinars and booking calendars from Starter, and a customer helpdesk from Growth. The ActiveCampaign stack above includes none of those, so a business that uses them would add a video host, a scheduling tool or a helpdesk on top. You also pay normal card processing on both sides, whichever platform takes the payment.

The last row is the case where ActiveCampaign wins outright. If the checkout, store or course platform is already paid for and working, Kartra's extra tools are money spent on things you will not use.

Email marketing and campaigns

ActiveCampaign is the more complete email tool. Its drag and drop designer comes with more than 250 templates, campaigns can be scheduled, triggered by date or built from an RSS feed, and A/B testing is available on every plan. Pro and Enterprise add conditional content, which changes blocks of an email for each reader, and predictive sending, which times each email for each contact. AI tools for writing, images and campaign building come with every plan, with limits on Starter and Plus.

Kartra's email builder covers the essentials well: broadcasts, sequences, templates and personalisation, with SMS in the same system. Where it falls short of ActiveCampaign is in the finer controls, such as conditional content blocks and send-time optimisation. What it does have is context. Because Kartra also runs your pages, checkouts and memberships, an email can react to a purchase, a page visit or a video watched without any setup between tools.

Email marketing

ActiveCampaign has more templates, finer personalisation and smarter send timing.

Automation depth and deliverability

This is ActiveCampaign's home ground. Its visual builder supports multiple triggers, branching conditions, goals and waits, and ActiveCampaign lists more than 950 ready-made automation recipes. From Plus there is no limit on actions per automation. Pro adds automation A/B testing and more active goals, and ActiveCampaign's AI can draft an automation from a description. If you want a sequence that changes path depending on what a contact opens, clicks, buys or scores, ActiveCampaign has the deeper toolkit.

Kartra's automations are simpler but reach further across the business. A rule can watch a checkout, a membership, a video, a form or a calendar booking, then tag the contact, subscribe them to a sequence, grant course access or credit an affiliate. Kartra includes 100 pre-built campaigns with pages, emails and automations already wired together, and advanced automations arrive on Growth.

On deliverability, we do not publish inbox placement scores, because they change with your list, your content and your domain setup more than with the platform. Both send from shared infrastructure by default, both let you authenticate your own sending domain, and Kartra can also send through external services such as Postmark, Mailgun or SendGrid. Clean lists and proper domain authentication matter more than the choice between these two.

Automation depth

ActiveCampaign goes deeper on logic. Kartra goes wider across the business.

Pages, checkout and memberships

Kartra includes everything needed to sell and deliver a digital product. The page builder and funnel mapper handle the sales journey. The checkout connects to Stripe, PayPal, Braintree, Square and Authorize.Net, sells one-off products, subscriptions and payment plans, and supports order bumps, upsells and coupons. Membership portals deliver courses with multiple access levels, and access is granted or removed automatically by purchases and tags.

ActiveCampaign has landing pages and forms from Plus, and Starter includes standard and inline forms. It has no checkout, no course area and no member login. It connects to Stripe, PayPal, Shopify, WooCommerce and other stores to pull in purchase data for automations and abandoned cart emails, but the selling happens somewhere else.

Selling and delivering products

Kartra sells and delivers. ActiveCampaign follows up on sales made elsewhere.

CRM, SMS and integrations

ActiveCampaign's contact records, tags, custom fields and lists are included on every plan, and its scoring and segmentation are among the best in this price range. Sales pipelines, deal records, account records and lead scoring sit in a paid CRM add-on available from Plus. SMS is also a paid add-on from Plus, with broadcast texts limited to a short list of countries led by the US and UK. The integration list is ActiveCampaign's other big strength, with more than 1,000 apps, including Shopify, WooCommerce, Salesforce, Calendly and Zapier.

Kartra's lead and sales management is simpler, built around tags, lists and purchase history rather than sales pipelines. Its plans count email and SMS sending together. Native integrations are a short list: payment processors, Google Calendar and Zoom, SMTP services, SMS delivery, external membership tools and Zapier. Zapier needs API access, which starts on Growth and has to be requested.

CRM and integrations

ActiveCampaign connects to far more tools and offers real sales pipelines.

WinnerActiveCampaign

Ease of use

ActiveCampaign is easier to learn for what it does. Sending a first campaign or switching on a ready-made automation recipe is quick, and the deeper features stay out of the way until you need them. The learning curve comes later, when you start building multi-branch automations and segments.

Kartra takes longer to learn because there is far more of it. Understanding how tags, lists, products, memberships and sequences connect is the real work, and the first funnel takes much longer than the fifth. The pre-built campaigns help, and the interface is in English only. Neither platform is hard for a reason that should put you off, but expect to spend more of your trial learning Kartra.

Learning curve

ActiveCampaign is quicker to start. Kartra needs more setup because it does more.

WinnerActiveCampaign

Can you use Kartra and ActiveCampaign together?

Yes. There is no native connection between them, but both work with Zapier, so a Kartra purchase or opt-in can add or tag a contact in ActiveCampaign. The catch is on the Kartra side: Zapier needs API access, which starts on Growth at $229 a month, or $189 billed annually, and is not available during the free trial. The setup steps are below.

The pairing makes sense for an established business that wants Kartra's checkout, memberships and affiliates, and already runs complex automations or a sales pipeline in ActiveCampaign that would be painful to rebuild. For most people it means paying twice for email and splitting contact data between two systems. If you are starting fresh, pick one.

How to connect Kartra to ActiveCampaign

Kartra does not have a native ActiveCampaign integration. Its own list of integrations covers payment processors, calendars and Zoom, outside email sending services, SMS, membership tools and Zapier, and ActiveCampaign is not on it. The supported route is Zapier, which lists both apps, so you build the link there as one or more Zaps.

What you need first

  • Kartra Growth or higher. Zapier connects through Kartra's API, and API access comes with Growth, Professional and Enterprise. Kartra's terms also rule out API access during the free trial.
  • Zapier approval from Kartra. Kartra asks you to request Zapier as an integration and fill in a short questionnaire. It says the reply takes one to two business days.
  • A paid ActiveCampaign plan. ActiveCampaign lists the Zapier connection on Starter, Plus, Pro and Enterprise.

The steps

  1. Request Zapier in Kartra. Go to Settings, then Integrations, and click + Integration. Choose Zapier under Providers, click Next and complete the questionnaire, then wait for Kartra to approve it.
  2. Copy your Kartra API key and password. In Kartra, go to Settings, then Integrations, then the API page. The Inbound API module shows your API key and API password.
  3. Copy your ActiveCampaign API URL and key. In ActiveCampaign, click Settings (the gear icon), then Developer, and copy the API URL and Key. Each user on the account has their own key.
  4. Connect both apps in Zapier. When Zapier asks you to sign in to Kartra, enter the Kartra API key and password. For ActiveCampaign, paste the API URL and Key.
  5. Build and test the Zap. Pick a Kartra trigger and an ActiveCampaign action from the lists below, map the email and name fields, and run a test lead through it before you switch it on.

What can sync between them

DirectionWhen this happensZapier can do this
Kartra to ActiveCampaignA customer buys, cancels a subscription or is refunded. A lead is tagged, joins a list, fills an opt-in form or is given membership access. An affiliate signs up.Create or update a contact, add or remove a tag, subscribe or unsubscribe a contact from a list, or add a contact to an automation.
ActiveCampaign to KartraA new contact is added, a contact joins a list, a tag is added or removed, or an automation fires a webhook.Create a new lead, assign a tag, subscribe the lead to a list or sequence, or edit the lead.

This is event-based rather than a full two-way sync. Each Zap passes one kind of event in one direction, so sending Kartra purchases into ActiveCampaign and sending ActiveCampaign tags back to Kartra are two separate Zaps. The most useful single Zap for most people is the first row: tag buyers in ActiveCampaign when they buy in Kartra, so your automations there know who has paid.

Requirements and steps come from Kartra's help centre articles on integrations and Zapier, and ActiveCampaign's help articles on its API and on Zapier. The trigger and action lists come from Zapier's Kartra and ActiveCampaign integration page. Menu names can change, so follow the current help article if a label looks different.

Common questions

Is Kartra better than ActiveCampaign?

Neither is better for everyone. ActiveCampaign is better for email marketing, automation depth and integrations. Kartra is better if you sell courses, coaching or digital products and want pages, email, checkout and memberships in one account.

What is the main difference between Kartra and ActiveCampaign?

ActiveCampaign is an email marketing and automation specialist that connects to the rest of your tools. Kartra is an all-in-one platform that includes email alongside pages, checkout, memberships, video hosting, a helpdesk and affiliate management.

Is ActiveCampaign cheaper than Kartra?

For email alone, yes. ActiveCampaign Starter is $15 a month billed annually at 1,000 contacts, against $52 for Kartra Essentials at 500 contacts. Once you add a checkout and course hosting to ActiveCampaign, Kartra is usually the cheaper total.

Does Kartra charge transaction fees?

Only on Essentials, which charges 5% of sales and rebills, invoiced monthly even on annual billing. Starter, Growth and Professional have no Kartra transaction fee. ActiveCampaign has no checkout and takes no share of sales.

Does ActiveCampaign have a checkout or course hosting?

No. ActiveCampaign has landing pages and forms, but no checkout, course area or membership login. It connects to stores and payment tools such as Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe and PayPal to use purchase data in automations.

Which has better email automation?

ActiveCampaign. It offers multiple triggers, branching logic, goals, more than 950 automation recipes, and conditional content and predictive sending on higher plans. Kartra's automations are simpler but can react to purchases, memberships and videos across the whole platform.

Does Kartra integrate with ActiveCampaign?

Not natively. You connect them through Zapier, which needs Kartra Growth or higher for API access, Kartra's approval for Zapier and a paid ActiveCampaign plan. A Kartra purchase, tag, list or form opt-in can then create, update or tag a contact in ActiveCampaign, and ActiveCampaign tags or list changes can update the lead in Kartra.

Do Kartra and ActiveCampaign have free trials?

Yes. Kartra currently offers a 30 day free trial on Essentials, Starter and Growth, and a 30 day money-back guarantee on paid plans. ActiveCampaign offers a 14 day free trial with no card needed, plus a 30 day money-back guarantee.

Which is better for course creators?

Kartra, for most course creators. It hosts courses and memberships, takes payments and runs email in one account. ActiveCampaign would need a separate course platform and checkout alongside it.

The verdict

ActiveCampaign wins for businesses whose main need is email marketing and automation, and which already have a website, store or checkout. Its automation logic, segmentation and integrations are deeper than Kartra's, and for email alone it costs less.

Kartra wins for course creators, coaches and digital product sellers who want the whole business in one account. At 2,500 contacts, Kartra Starter costs the same as ActiveCampaign Plus on monthly billing, and it also includes the checkout, memberships, pages and video hosting that ActiveCampaign would need other tools for.

The deciding question is what you already pay for. Add up your checkout, course host and page builder. If that total is close to Kartra's price for your contact count, take Kartra. If those tools are already paid for and working, take ActiveCampaign. Both have free trials, so build the same sequence in each before you commit.
